Why Complete Documentation Matters

Documentation Is an Engineering Discipline, Not an Administrative Burden

In many engineering organizations, documentation is treated as something that happens after the design is done — a filing exercise, not an engineering activity. The result is incomplete, inconsistent, and often inaccurate records that cannot support a certification audit, cannot be handed over to a new engineering team without significant reverse engineering, and cannot serve as a reliable basis for engineering change decisions years after the original design.

At Pabst Electronics, documentation is an integral part of the design process. Every component value in a Pabst Electronics design has a calculation behind it. Every protection circuit has a sizing rationale. Every component rating has a derating verification. Every isolation boundary has an insulation coordination analysis. These calculations are not done informally and discarded — they are captured in structured documentation that becomes part of the permanent engineering record of the product.

This approach is not just good engineering practice — it is a direct requirement for safety certification. Certification bodies require evidence that design decisions were made deliberately and correctly. A complete design calculation package is that evidence.

Every resistor divider, RC filter, decoupling capacitor, current-limiting resistor, voltage reference, and protection component has its value derived from first principles and documented. This is not just for auditors — it is how good engineering is done.

📐 Insulation Coordination

Complete insulation coordination analysis per IEC 60664 — working voltage identification, overvoltage category assignment, pollution degree classification, required clearance and creepage distances for every isolation boundary in the design.

📉 Derating Analysis

Component stress analysis for every active and passive component — operating voltage as a percentage of rated voltage, power dissipation versus rated power, junction temperature versus maximum rating — all documented in a structured derating report.

📋 Compliance Traceability Matrix

A structured document that maps every applicable standard clause to a specific design requirement and to the design evidence that demonstrates compliance. This is the core document for safety certification technical file preparation.

🔧 Design Rationale Documents

For non-obvious design decisions — topology selection, component technology choice, protection circuit approach — a structured rationale document explains what alternatives were considered, why the chosen approach was selected, and what tradeoffs were accepted.

📦 Manufacturing Data Package

Complete, unambiguous manufacturing documentation — Gerber/ODB++ fabrication files, fully specified BOM with approved sources, assembly drawings with polarity and orientation markings, pick-and-place files, and fabrication notes.
