Complete Test Plans

A product without a complete test plan is not ready for production. We create the full set of test plans — from ICT and FVT to third-party safety pre-compliance — before your first production run.

Why Test Plans Must Come First

Quality Escapes Begin with Missing Test Plans

A surprising number of electronics products enter production without complete, validated test plans. The consequences are predictable: defective boards that pass testing because the test doesn’t cover the failure mode, functional problems discovered only by end customers, certification failures that could have been caught in pre-compliance testing, and expensive rework campaigns that trace back to insufficient production testing.

Having complete, well-structured test plans before production begins is one of the most effective ways to prevent quality escapes and certification surprises. It forces clarity about what needs to be verified, how it will be verified, and what the pass/fail criteria are — before any boards are assembled and before any test lab appointments are booked.

At Pabst Electronics, test plan creation is treated as an engineering deliverable with the same rigor as schematic design or PCB layout. We create test plans that are complete, precise, and practically executable — because our engineers understand both the product design and the test environment.

Test Plan Types We Create

1
ICT Test PlanIn-circuit test — component presence, value, and orientation verification
2
FVT Test PlanFunctional verification — complete product function at board level
3
End-of-Line Test PlanFinal production test — complete assembled product verification
4
Safety Pre-Compliance Test PlanIn-house safety testing before formal certification submission
5
EMC Pre-Compliance Test PlanEmissions and immunity pre-screening before formal EMC testing
6
Test Report TemplatesStructured templates for recording and archiving test results

What Each Test Plan Contains

🔌 ICT Test Plan

The ICT test plan defines the complete in-circuit test strategy for the assembled PCB — the list of nets to be tested, the test point locations and access method, the stimulus and measurement approach for each test, the parametric limits for each measurement, and the pass/fail criteria.

Our ICT test plans are developed in conjunction with the PCB layout, ensuring that test point placement is deliberate and that the planned test strategy achieves the target net coverage before the layout is finalized.

⚡ FVT Test Plan

The functional verification test plan defines how the complete function of the assembled board will be verified — the test sequence, the stimulus inputs, the expected outputs and measurements, the parametric limits, and the pass/fail criteria for every functional block.

FVT test plans are developed in parallel with the hardware design, ensuring that the required test stimulus and measurement access points are designed into the hardware — not discovered to be missing after the layout is complete.

🏭 End-of-Line (EOL) Test Plan

The EOL test plan verifies the complete assembled product — PCB, enclosure, cables, and accessories — at the end of the production line before packaging and shipment. It covers electrical function, mechanical assembly, label and marking verification, and any safety-relevant checks required before the product leaves the factory.

EOL test plans are designed for speed and reliability — optimized for the production line cycle time while maintaining complete coverage of the critical product parameters.

🛡️ Safety Pre-Compliance Test Plan

The safety pre-compliance test plan defines the in-house tests that can be performed before formal certification laboratory submission to identify and resolve compliance issues early. Based on first-hand knowledge of how IEC and UL compliance tests are actually conducted, our pre-compliance test plans are realistic, executable with standard laboratory equipment, and highly predictive of formal certification outcomes.

Pre-compliance testing is one of the highest-value investments in a product development program — catching certification failures before they cost full laboratory fees and program delays.

📡 EMC Pre-Compliance Test Plan

The EMC pre-compliance test plan defines the emissions and immunity screening tests that can be performed before formal EMC certification. Based on our first-hand experience with IEC 61000-3 and IEC 61000-4 test execution, these plans are practically configured and aligned to the same conditions used in accredited EMC laboratories.

EMC pre-compliance testing with a well-designed test plan typically reduces formal EMC certification costs by 30–50% by eliminating the most common failure modes before the product reaches the laboratory.

📋 Test Report Templates

For every test plan we create, we also deliver structured test report templates that capture the required measurements, record the actual results, calculate pass/fail status, and provide space for the test operator’s observations and anomaly notes.

Well-designed test report templates are essential for quality traceability, corrective action analysis, and regulatory compliance documentation. They ensure that test records are complete, consistent, and actionable.
